Tongue is most important part of oral cavity. Tongue gave you clues about any problems in your oral cavity.

HEALTHY TONGUE LOOKS LIKE
1)Pink with papilla covering.
2)There are numerous taste buds, that are collection of nerve like cells that connects these to brain, so you can feel sour, sweet, bitter & salty.
3)It is important for chewing, speech, swallowing.
4)Saliva produced by tongue acts as self cleanser of oral cavity.

FEATURES OF UNHEALTHY tongue
1)Spots & blisters like appearance.
2)Swelling and deviation from normal.
3)Excessive salivation or less salivation that is dry mouth some time along with severe pain and burning sensation.

WHEN YOU SHOULD VISIT YOUR DENTIST REGARDING TONGUE SYMPTOMS
1)Thrush or oral candidiadis-yeast whitish layer over tongue sometimes unscrappable. Yeast grows over tongue surface. Some time seen at mouth surface also.
2)Macroglossia or big tongue-It is a condition when tongue appeared big than normal or according to teeth and jaw size ratio. This symptom may be congenital means since birth or acquired due to trauma, thyroid disease, any metabolic disorder .
3)Oral cancer-growth or ulceration on surface of tongue. Commonly seen in smokers and alcoholics.
4)Bald tongue-Tongue loses its texture means papilla and became smooth.This occurs due to metabolic disorder or blood disorder and sometimes due to vitamins deficiency.
5)Canker sores or Serious ulcer-These are some times associated with viral infection. These are small painful ulcer appeared on tongue surface, sometimes goes by itself
6)Hairy tongue -sometimes papilla are overgrown on tongue surface results in change in texture and appearance of tongue. In some cases seen as black hairy tongue.
7)Burning tongue syndrome -associated with certain vitamins deficiency
8)Lichen planus-low immune system causes this condition affects tongue and lining of oral mucosa.
9)Herpes stomatitis-cold sores on tongue caused by herpes virus.
10)Geographical tongue-harmless condition in which ridged and colored spot.
